an Indian political party established in 1885; held power in the Indian national government from independence in 1947 to 1977; in 1977 split into various factions, the largest, under Indira Gandhi, being known as Congress (I) (the I representing her name); this survived as the main Congress Party and later re-adopted the official name Indian National Congress; held power in the national government 1980–89, 1991–96, and from 2004.
